At about 18:00 GMT (17:17-18:03) a huge X17 class flare occurred (see charts below). Although not directed at the Earth we are seeing the effects with the Proton Flux (Positive Ion Ratio increase) which is continuing to increase. Note an X6 flare in July 2000 triggered a radiation storm around Earth nicknamed the Bastille Day event. Also an immense X28 flare November 4th 2003 caused a decline in our protective ozone layer in the Northern hemisphere by up to 60 percent http://www.livescience.com/forcesofnature/050301_ozone_thinning.html
